PHOENIX – Secretary of State Adrian Fontes announced Sophie Stern and Tysen Woodward as the esteemed recipients of this year’s National Association of Secretaries of State John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. This prestigious honor recognizes young leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to civil rights, civic participation, and voter engagement which are values exemplified by the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis.

“Sophie Stern and Tysen Woodward exemplify the spirit of leadership, service, and civic responsibility that this award represents,” said Secretary Adrian Fontes. “Through their dedication to empowering their peers and strengthening democratic participation, they have made a meaningful impact on civic engagement in their communities. We are proud to recognize their work and leadership with this award.”

Sophie Stern exemplifies leadership, resilience, and advocacy for disability rights. As the newest member of the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, Sophie uses her platform to champion self-advocacy, equal opportunities, and community inclusion.

Beyond her policy work, Sophie combines her passion for the performing arts with advocacy, inspiring others through her performances at Detour Company Theatre while challenging stereotypes about disability.

Her leadership, voice, and unwavering dedication make Sophie Stern not only a role model but a transformative advocate whose impact resonates across Arizona and beyond.

Tysen Woodward was selected for this honor because his leadership and dedication to civic engagement embody the core values of equality, justice, and democratic participation that this award represents.

As State Chair of the Kids Voting Arizona Leadership Council, Tysen has led initiatives that reached thousands of students statewide. By moderating a statewide Town Hall with Arizona’s Secretary of State, a Supreme Court Justice, and a State Legislator, he brought critical conversations on voting rights and civil discourse to over 1,200 students.

His courage, empathy, and unwavering commitment to democracy make him not only an outstanding nominee but a true example of the future John Lewis envisioned.

Both Stern and Woodward have shown a strong commitment to increasing voter awareness and participation, particularly among young and first-time voters. Their efforts have contributed to fostering a culture of civic responsibility and informed engagement, encouraging others to take an active role in the democratic process.

The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office extends its warmest congratulations to Sophie Stern and Tysen Woodward on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to their continued contributions to strengthening democracy at the local, state, and national levels.
