Secretary Fontes Announces New Funding to Help Counties Maintain Accurate Voter Registration Rolls

More than $4.22 million made available to counties since 2024, including new funding dedicated to voter registration list maintenance

PHOENIX – Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes today announced the availability of $210,000 in new funding to help Arizona’s 15 county recorders maintain accurate voter registration rolls and verify documented proof of citizenship (DPOC), reinforcing his commitment to ensuring that Arizona’s voter registration system remains accurate, secure, and compliant with state law.

The new funding builds on more than $4.22 million the Secretary of State’s Office has made available to counties since 2024 through federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and funding approved by the Arizona Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC) to strengthen election administration, improve voter services, support election workers, enhance election security, and maintain Arizona’s statewide voter registration system.

“Maintaining accurate voter registration rolls is one of the most important responsibilities county recorders have,” said Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes. “Our county election officials work every day to ensure that eligible voters can participate while keeping voter registration records accurate and up to date. My job is to make sure they have the resources they need to do that work well.”

The $210,000 Voter Registration List Maintenance Funds are available to all 15 county recorders and may be used for a wide range of activities that improve the accuracy of voter registration records, including:

DPOC verification;
Mailing and processing voter notices;
Staff time dedicated to voter registration list maintenance;
Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) membership dues;
Acquiring verified information from government or commercial sources to assist with list maintenance; and
Other activities that improve the accuracy and completeness of county voter registration records.

This funding recognizes the increasing workload county election officials face as they fulfill their statutory responsibility to maintain accurate voter registration records and comply with both state and federal law.

The more than $4.22 million in county election support reflects a combination of federal ARPA funding and funding approved by the Arizona JLBC for county election support and statewide voter registration system operations. Since 2024, the Secretary of State’s Office has made those funds available to counties, including:

$1.89 million to reimburse counties for operating and enhancing Arizona’s statewide voter registration system (AVID);
$829,582 for election technology, cybersecurity, and training;
$552,250 for election workforce and election administration support;
$547,044 for BallotTrax and Text2Cure to improve voter service and ballot processing; and
$405,000 for voter registration list maintenance and DPOC verification.

Secretary Fontes noted that the new funding continues Arizona’s longstanding investment in voter registration integrity. In FY2024, the Arizona Legislature appropriated $6 million to the state’s six largest county recorder offices to review the accuracy of voter registration rolls and conduct voter registration list maintenance. Combined with the Secretary of State’s investments since 2024, Arizona has directed more than $10.22 million toward supporting county voter registration list maintenance, election administration, election security, and voter services over the past several fiscal years.

“Arizona’s elections are administered locally by the people who know their communities best,” Fontes said. “Whether it’s a rural county with a handful of staff or one of our largest urban jurisdictions, every county deserves the tools and support necessary to maintain accurate voter registration records, serve voters efficiently, and conduct secure, professional elections. That’s exactly what these investments are designed to do.”
