SUFFS at ASU Gammage Sets the Stage for Arizona's America250 Celebration
PHOENIX – Arizona’s official America250 Commission is proud to partner with ASU Gammage to kick off the state’s commemoration of America’s 250th birthday with SUFFS as one the signature events. SUFFS tells the bold and often overlooked story of the women who fought for the right to vote, with wit, grit, and unforgettable music, running October 14 –19, with a special celebration America’s 250th celebration on opening night, Tuesday, October 14.
“SUFFS honors the fearless women who reshaped our democracy and reminds us the fight for equality is never finished,” Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes praised the production, stating, “Arizona women won the right to vote in 1912, and their legacy still drives us forward.”
Created by Shaina Taub, the first woman in Broadway history to independently win Tony Awards for both Best Book and Best Score in the same season, SUFFS is a “thrilling, inspiring and dazzlingly entertaining” (Variety) musical that confronts the unfinished business of equality in America. The show recently won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Musical.
Opening Night on Tuesday, October 14, New York-based producers and creatives of SUFFS will be in attendance for Opening Night, along with special guests and America250 dignitaries.
“To be able to partner on opening night for SUFFS at ASU Gammage is an incredible and fitting event for what Arizona America250 wants to uplift,” says Anna Needham, Chair of the Arizona America250 Arts, Museums & Cultural Institutions Subcommittee. “The show demonstrates how the arts can help us understand our past to envision the future we want for the next 250 years and the legacy we want to leave behind.”
This event is part of a broader effort by the Arizona America250 Commission to commemorate the Semiquincentennial with programs that elevate the voices of those who shaped the American story, and those still shaping it today.
