Secretary of State Bennett Releases Latest Voter Registration Figures

Voter Registration Remains Strong

PHOENIX – Secretary of State Ken Bennett today released the latest statewide voter registration figures compiled as of July 1, 2009. After passing the 3 million registered voters mark back in January, voter registration figures have continued to climb. Since April, the state has seen an increase of 15,751 new voters. This increase brings the total state registrants to 3,103,747.

While some political parties have benefited from this growth, others have experienced a decline. There are now 1,135,199 registered Republicans statewide, a decrease of 2,063 since April. Registered Democrats now total 1,045,090, a decrease of 1,090. Both the Libertarian and Green parties saw an increase in registered voters with Libertarians gaining 1,024 voters for a total of 21,280 while the Green party added 19 registered voters for a total of 4,229.

Arizonans registered as Independents or as members of unrecognized parties are grouped together in the “Other” category on the voter registration figures. The voters in that group now total 897,989, an increase of 17,861 since April.

Secretary of State Bennett stated, “It is wonderful to see Arizonans continuing to exercise their right to freely choose their leaders. My office will continue to reach out to Arizona citizens, regardless of political affiliation, in an effort to encourage them to engage in the democratic process.”

Secretary Bennett added, “I am grateful for the continued hard work of the county recorders, without whom none of this would be possible.”
