Secretary of State Bennett Releases Latest Voter Registration Figures

Voter Registration Continues To Rise

PHOENIX -- Secretary of State Ken Bennett released on Friday the latest statewide voter registration figures compiled as of October 1, 2009. Since July, the state has seen an increase of 14,731 new voters. This increase brings the total state registrants to 3,118,478. It marks the sixth straight quarter in which total voter registration has increased.

While some political parties have benefited from this growth, others have experienced a decline. There are now 1,132,817 registered Republicans statewide, a decrease of 2,382 since July. Registered Democrats now total 1,041,415, a decrease of 3,635. Both the Libertarian and Green parties saw an increase in registered voters with Libertarians gaining 2,748 voters for a total of 24,028 while the Green party added 8 registered voters for a total of 4,237.

Arizonans registered as Independents or as members of unrecognized parties are grouped together in the “Other” category on the voter registration figures. The voters in that group now total 915,981, an increase of 17,992 since July.

Secretary of State Bennett stated, “To see this consistent, increasing trend in total voter registration is very encouraging. With the 2010 election cycle approaching, it makes me very confident that these numbers will only continue upward.”

Secretary Bennett added, “All of Arizona’s county recorders along with the political parties play a crucial role in the voter registration process. Without all of their continued hard work none of this would be possible.”

A copy of the voter registration figures by county is included with the press release. Copies are also available at the Secretary of State’s office on the 7th Floor of the State Capitol, or by calling the Election Services Division at 602-542-8683 or 1-877-THE VOTE (1-877-843-8683), or by visiting the Secretary of State’s Web site at
