PRESS RELEASE

PHOENIX – Established in 1878, Spanish-language newspaper El Fronterizo ran for 36 years in Tucson, making it one of the most successful newspapers in Arizona’s Mexican community. The publication ceased for 14 years, until a new owner and publisher began publishing the newspaper once again in 1922. The newspaper picked up right where it left off, by reporting on international, local and border town issues for Arizona citizens once again. While digital copies from the early days of El Fronterizo have been available for several years on the Arizona Memory Project, the rebirth of this important newspaper was recently added to the collection.

“El Fronterizo was a Spanish-language newspaper published in the 1920s in Tucson. It was an important community paper that focused on news from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Mary Feeney, news research librarian at the University of Arizona Libraries and National Digital Newspaper Program grant project lead at the UAL. “El Fronterizo is part of the University of Arizona Libraries’ Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press digital collection.”

This is just one of the seven Spanish-language newspaper titles that were digitized and added to the Arizona Memory Project by the Arizona State Library in partnership with the University of Arizona Libraries, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Library of Congress’ National Digital Newspaper Program. These new issues of El Fronterizo span from 1926-1929 and will be available indefinitely and can be viewed for free on any digital device at https://azmemory.azlibrary.gov/digital/collection/sn95070521.
