PHOENIX – In publication for over 90 years, The Nogales International has covered community issues as well as major international historical events like Word War II. Initially published as The International, the paper would share letters of servicemen from Santa Cruz County. It has also reported on issues related to politics, infrastructure and trade relations with Mexico.

“One objective of this grant was digitizing newspapers from the US-Mexico border,” said Sativa Peterson, National Digital Newspaper Program grant project director and news content program manager for the State of Arizona Research Library. “For a time in 1925, The International published pages in both English and Spanish. Also of interest, the newspaper chronicled border activities during the years of Prohibition in the United States.”

The Nogales International and The International are just two of the 40 newspaper titles that were digitized by the Arizona State Library in partnership with the University of Arizona Libraries, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Library of Congress’ National Digital Newspaper Program. Issues available from the International and Nogales International range from 1925 through 1947. They will be available on the Arizona Memory Project indefinitely and can be viewed for free on any digital device at http://go.azsos.gov/ln9k and http://go.azsos.gov/ln9l.
