Secretary of State’s Office offers training for Arizonans interested in running for office

New handbooks with guidance for candidates, political action committees and lobbyists for the 2020 election cycle also available

PHOENIX – The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office announces a new Candidate Filing Workshop in March for Arizonans interested in running for office, along with a series of handbooks providing guidance for candidates, political action committees, and lobbyists for the 2020 election cycle.

“The upcoming trainings are a resource for potential new candidates and those who have run for office before,” Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said. “Participating in our democracy as a candidate can be both exciting and overwhelming. We want to make sure people have what they need to be prepared.”

The Candidate Filing Workshop covers how to prepare and file nomination paperwork for federal, statewide, and legislative offices. The filing window is open for candidates participating in Clean Elections. Traditional candidates for these offices may file with the Secretary of State’s Office between March 7 and April 6, 2020.

Workshop Details

When: March 5, 2020 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

March 6, 2020 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Additionally, the Secretary of State’s Office has four new handbooks on running for office, campaign finance, and lobbying. Each of the handbooks is available online.

Running for Public Office: A Candidate Guide is available at http://go.azsos.gov/l34t and provides information about:

  • Federal, statewide and legislative offices up for election in 2020
  • Filing procedures
  • Signature requirements

The Campaign Finance Candidate Handbook is available at http://go.azsos.gov/l3rb, and includes information on how to:

  • Establish a candidate committee
  • Qualify for public funding
  • Report financial activity

The Campaign Finance Guide for Political Action Committees is available at http://go.azsos.gov/l4c2 and includes information on how to:

  • Establish a political committee
  • File a campaign finance report
  • Report financial activity

The Arizona lobbying handbook is available at http://go.azsos.gov/l3rc and includes information on:

  • Registration
  • Reporting
  • Filing requirements

“These handbooks provide important information in an accessible format,” Hobbs said. “We urge candidates, political action committees and lobbyists to use these guides to navigate the process. And, as always, anyone with questions should reach out to our office.”
