Secretary Fontes Announces September as National Voter Registration Month

PRESS RELEASE
Thursday, September 7, 2023

PHOENIX - Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes is proud to join the National Association of Secretaries of State in commemorating September as National Voter Registration Month. This annual observance encourages eligible Arizonans to take a proactive step towards participating in the democratic process by registering to vote and verifying their current registration status.

Secretary Fontes believes that civic participation is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, stating, "National Voter Registration Month serves as a reminder of the fundamental importance of voter engagement in our democratic system. Registering to vote is not only a right but a responsibility we all share as citizens. It's the foundation upon which our democracy stands."

As part of this month-long initiative, Secretary Fontes also wishes to remind Arizonans about key deadlines and requirements related to voter registration in the state. In Arizona, eligible voters must register at least 29 days before an election to participate. This ensures that their voter registration is processed in time for them to cast their ballots.

Additionally, Arizona's Presidential Preference Election (PPE) on March 19, 2024, has unique rules. To participate in the PPE, voters must be registered members of a participating political party. Secretary Fontes encourages voters to check their registration status and, if necessary, update their party affiliation by Feb. 20, 2024 to ensure they have the opportunity to make their voice heard in the party election of their choice.

Voters registered as “independent” or “party not designated” are not eligible to participate in the PPE unless they update their party affiliation. To register to vote or change your voter registration information, visit servicearizona.com.

Furthermore, Secretary Fontes emphasizes the importance of staying informed about upcoming elections at the county and local levels. Voters are encouraged to visit their county and local election offices’ websites to verify election dates, polling locations, and other essential information regarding the November 2023 elections. To find your county contact information, visit azsos.gov/county-election-info.

The Arizona Secretary of State's office is dedicated to facilitating accessible, secure, and transparent elections for all eligible voters in the state, and is committed to ensuring that every voice is heard in Arizona's democratic process.
