PHOENIX -Secretary of State Adrian Fontes joined tribal members, students, and many others to commemorate National Voter Registration Day. This annual nonpartisan event, established by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in 2002, aims to encourage voter participation and increase awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting.

Secretary Fontes met with present and future voters at various locations, including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Phoenix Coding Academy, and ASU’s Downtown Campus. At these visits, he discussed the importance of voter participation and the state's role in ensuring accessible and secure elections for all eligible voters—including many high school seniors, who can pre-register to vote in time for the 2024 elections.

NASS selected September as National Voter Registration Month and Sept. 19th as National Voter Registration Day to highlight the crucial role of state and local election officials as trusted sources of election information. As part of the effort to promote reliable election information, Secretary Fontes joined other Secretaries of State to encourage the use of the social media hashtag #TrustedInfo.

In 2022, National Voter Registration Day had a significant impact on voter engagement, with 414,016 individuals registering to vote across the U.S. Over the past decade, National Voter Registration Day efforts nationwide have led to more than 5,000,000 people registering to vote, demonstrating the enduring success of this initiative as a catalyst for civic participation.

Secretary Fontes emphasized the importance of National Voter Registration Day, stating, "This annual event provides a valuable opportunity for us to come together as a community and ensure that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to participate in our democratic process. By registering to vote, individuals have a say in shaping the future of our state and our nation."

Secretary Fontes invites all citizens of Arizona to join him in celebrating National Voter Registration Day by visiting my.arizona.vote to check their registration status, and to learn more about their voting rights, responsibilities, and upcoming election deadlines.
