Secretary Fontes Kicks Off Mexican Independence Day Festivities by Commemorating 'El Grito' at Arizona State Capitol
PHOENIX - Secretary of State Adrian Fontes marked the beginning of Mexican Independence Day festivities on Friday night by making a speech at the Arizona State Capitol that celebrated the rich contributions of Mexican-Americans, and called on all Arizonans to stand together and defend our shared values of freedom, equality, and unity.
"This celebration gives us the opportunity to reflect on our Mexican heritage and how it has enriched the lives of so many here in Arizona," Secretary Fontes said. "We are a diverse, strong, and resilient community, and our history is an integral part of who we are today. On this special day, let us celebrate our shared roots and work together to overcome any obstacles that stand in our way."
Yesterday's event commemorated "El Grito" -- the call for Mexican independence made on Sept. 16, 1810 when the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, along with other brave leaders, began the fight against their Spanish oppressors. It was a crucial moment in the history of Mexico, marking the beginning of a successful fight for freedom and self-determination.
Joining Secretary Fontes at the event was House Speaker Ben Toma, Senate President Warren Petersen, Reps. Alma Hernandez and Mariana Sandoval, and Mexican Consul Jorge Mendoza Yescas.
