PHOENIX – A system update of the statewide voter registration database, known as the Arizona Voter Information Database (AVID), on Tuesday allows voters to better track ballots cast in person, by mail or at drop boxes.

This update was prompted by feedback from some in-person early voters, who received confusing ballot status messages in the state’s voter information portal at My.Arizona.Vote.

“Recently my office implemented a legislative mandate requiring changes to the ballot status codes in the state’s AVID voter registration system,” said Adrian Fontes, Arizona Secretary of State. “The system uses status codes to identify where a ballot is in the voting process. The change in these status codes should clarify confusion and allow voters to know when their ballot has been ‘received’ by the county recorders and at what stage of the processing status their ballot is in.”

Implementation of this change to the status codes resulted in confusing messages to in-person early voters who checked their ballot status at My.Arizona.Vote. Approximately 180 voters from the 13 rural counties that utilize the AVID system for their day-to-day voter registration and early ballot processing were potentially affected by the confusing messages. This issue has now been corrected and the ballot status message for early in-person voters should be clear. This issue did not extend to voters returning ballots in the mail or in an official election drop box.

Additionally, the Secretary of State’s office is testing a new text alert system that allows voters, regardless of what county they live in, to sign-up and receive text alerts about the status of their ballot. The language of these text messages has also been updated to increase clarity. The text message system is updated once daily, so voters may experience a slight delay before seeing an updated message.
