Fontes Unanimously Appointed Chair of Arizona's America250 Commission
PHOENIX – Secretary of State Adrian Fontes has been unanimously appointed as the Chair of Arizona's America250 Commission. The announcement comes following the commission's inaugural agenda item for this year: recognizing Arizona's winning students of America's Field Trip, a nationwide scholastic contest designed to engage youth in commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Launched in March 2024, America's Field Trip offers students once-in-a-lifetime, behind-the-scenes field trip experiences at iconic historical and cultural sites across the United States. This pilot program is set to grow and expand each year, leading up to the 2026 celebrations.
Even though the big America250 event is 1 year, 11 months, and 9 days away, the "Semiquincentennial" commemoration is also an opportunity to share American history in ways that fully explore the diverse people and complex events of our country's past.
Former Representative Laura Terech will serve as the Executive Director of the Commission, with Chairman Verlon Jose taking on the role of Vice Chair, aptly chosen to honor Arizona's pre-statehood history.
"I am excited to serve the Commission in a staffing capacity and celebrate the joy of the American experience as an Arizonan," Terech said. "With my strong ties to communities throughout the state, we will commemorate our vibrant heritage and inspire participation in our democracy."
Commission Members Include:
- Secretary of State Adrian Fontes
- Chairman Verlon Jose
- Anna Needham
- Ashley Harder

All meetings are virtually open to the public, with a call to the audience at the end of each session.
