PHOENIX – Early voting is underway, and the Arizona Secretary of State’s Artificial Intelligence & Election Security Advisory Committee has released 4 key recommendations to help voters navigate today’s complex information landscape. With the rise of false information, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and protect the integrity of the vote. The Committee offers practical guidance to ensure that voters make decisions based on accurate, trustworthy information.

“We’ve seen AI-manipulated media used right here in Arizona to spread false information.” stated Secretary Fontes. “This is real, and voters need to stay sharp. Rely on trusted sources and report misinformation to protect the integrity of your vote.”

1. Learn:

Access election information from reliable sources. The Committee emphasizes visiting the official Arizona Secretary of State website for accurate and up-to-date election details. The proliferation of false content, including deepfakes, means voters must remain vigilant. Research shows that false news can spread six times faster than accurate information on social media platforms, making it crucial to verify before sharing.

2. Engage:

Active participation in democratic processes is key. The Committee encourages voters to engage in civil discussions, even with those who hold different viewpoints. Making a plan to vote—whether early in person or by mail—is another essential step. Voters can visit Arizona.Vote to find their polling location or request a mail-in ballot. Sharing correct election information within your community can amplify truth and counteract the spread of misinformation.

3. Question:

Critical thinking is the first line of defense against misinformation. Before sharing content, voters should check multiple credible sources, including government sites and reputable news outlets. Be wary of content designed to evoke strong emotional reactions, as this is often a tactic used to spread false or misleading information. Thoughtfully considering the credibility of sources helps prevent the inadvertent spread of inaccurate information.

4. Report:

If you come across false election information, report it directly to the platform where you found it. Additionally, the Arizona Secretary of State’s office offers a hotline for reporting suspicious election-related activities at 1-877-THE-VOTE (1-877-843-8683), or via email at [email protected]. Reporting plays a critical role in ensuring false information is addressed swiftly and effectively.
