Secretary Fontes Opens Applications for the 2024 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award

PHOENIX – Secretary of State Adrian Fontes invites young people from across Arizona to apply for the forthcoming John Lewis Youth Leadership Awards. This prestigious award, established in 2021 by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), seeks to honor the exemplary efforts of young Arizonans who embody the spirit of leadership, social justice, and community service that Congressman John Lewis championed in his lifetime.

“This prestigious award honors an exceptional Arizonan who embodies character, dedication, and selfless service, reflecting Congressman Lewis's legacy. Throughout his life, Congressman Lewis fought bravely for marginalized communities.” Secretary Fontes stated, “This award recognizes the vital work of our young leaders and promotes the values that make our nation great.”

The award bears the name of the late Congressman John Lewis, in recognition of his fearless accomplishments during the Civil Rights Movement and his extensive career in public service, which have left an enduring impact on the nation's history. His activism, which began at an early age, continued throughout his life, and led to his decades of service in the U.S. Congress until his passing in 2020.

The recipient of the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award will be announced on December 10, 2024.

To be eligible for consideration, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 25 years old or younger at the time the award is presented.
  • Demonstrate a meaningful commitment to civil rights issues, including but not limited to voting rights.
  • Have provided service to a community in Arizona

 

Applications for the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award are now open, and interested individuals can submit their applications online through this official application form by November 29, 2024.
