Statement From: Secretary of State Adrian Fontes 2023-2024 Election Calendar
Statement From: Secretary of State Adrian Fontes 2023-2024 Election Calendar
The Secretary of State (SOS) regularly publishes an elections calendar to inform legislators and the public about approaching dates and deadlines. Though there is nothing written in statute that requires the SOS to create an election calendar, as Chief Elections Officer it is the SOS’s responsibility to inform legislators and the public on elections. Our office is releasing this draft of the 2023-2024 election calendar as a guide to these important dates and deadlines. We are currently working with the Legislature, County Recorders, Elections Directors, and other stakeholders to finalize dates and deadlines that comply with state and federal law.
Included in this draft calendar are the dates when General Elections, Primary Elections and Local Elections are expected to occur. There are also important deadlines that candidates, recorders, and other elections officials should monitor. Some of these dates are established in Arizona Revised Statute (ARS) and Federal law, and therefore cannot be altered, which might impact the scheduling of other dates on the calendar. Adding to the complexity of scheduling, other election dates and deadlines are established by the State Legislature or the Elections Procedures Manual, which is generated by SOS and approved by the Governor and Attorney General. By publishing an election calendar that references the federal law, state statute, legislation, or the Elections Procedures Manual that establishes each date, SOS aims to create a document that is transparent and easy to understand.
A draft of the election calendar is included and serves as an example. The information included in this draft copy is subject to change and should be used only as guide until final dates are published.
Be sure to look out for a complete version of the 2023-2024 election calendar to be released by our office.
