Due to flooding in northern Arizona, at least 15 people are missing or unaccounted for after flash floods overwhelmed a remote area of the Grand Canyon. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes released the following statement:

“Today’s flooding at the Grand Canyon is devastating. I send my deepest thanks to the first responders doing everything they can to find those still missing and the good work they did to evacuate others in the affected area. The physical damage includes a historic lodge near the bottom of the site and untold environmental upheaval. The loss of memories at these sights serve as a stark reminder of what can be lost at any moment. I send my prayers to the community as the search for those unaccounted for continues.

At this time, The National Park Service is asking for information about anyone who may have been hiking or backpacking along Bright Angel Creek in Arizona, as well as campers with plans to stay at Phantom Ranch or the Bright Angel Campground. Please contact them if you have any information.”
